"Often working directly onto found materials and objects, David Shillinglaw’s composite paintings, drawings and unruly sculptures (all for sale) rub up ancient semiotics and contemporary references to scintillating effect. His obsession with the futility of being human –and its inherent mistakes – makes for a fabulously vivid jumble of ideas.

Dominated by turquoise hues, Shillinglaw’s deft portfolio, detailing landscapes, thoughts and emotions, sometimes on the same canvas, is wildly eclectic. Here, surrounded by garish tones and bold, surreal concepts, it feels like you’ve suddenly materialised in the middle of a 1960s Czech animation. Full of disembodied figures, random slogans and indiscriminate scribbles seemingly thrown in for the sheer hell of it, it’s a complicated body of work that betrays the artist’s wonderfully convoluted thought processes.

While overloading canvases – such as his Chaos Is My Favourite Colour series – is clearly where Shillinglaw feels most comfortable, his minimalistic efforts are no less salient: a stark landscape of trees painted on an old street sign stands out amidst a cluster of small, busy miniatures. Similarly, the phrenological Auto Portrait and Head Full (pictured), depicting thoughts, emotions and ruminations on popular culture, recall David Shrigley’s wry sketches, another erudite string to Shillinglaw’s vast artistic bow."
